Pre-liminary Task

For the pre-lim task we worked in two groups and both groups had to make a video for the song "a Whiter shade of pale" covered by Annie Lennox. Our group decided to make a video about a prostitute who walks around a train station not knowing what to do with her life. She feels that this is the only method of earning money at the time. For the shooting of the video we could only use one camera during the shoot, so this meant constantly moving the camera into all different positions so it was probable for continuity errors.

We could only cover 2 and a half minutes of the song with a video purely because we only had two days to shoot and edit the video. We tried to get as much footage as we could, so we could actually get a decent length video. During the shooting of the video we used a Tripod to fit the camera onto to prevent from getting a shaky shot. I think this was a very good pre-lim task because it was our first go at making a music video and we had an experience of what it would be like to make a music video, I think the weakest point of our pre-lim task was the planning, we had a storyboard which was half finished and in the end we didn't follow the storyboard. I believe this was our weak point in the whole of the pre-lim task as we could of done much better, but as this was our first task we were a bit unaware of how much work there was to do. Another problem we had during the filming process was the fact that we only had one camera, so it was quite hard to get all the shots we wanted without the risk of continuity errors. I believe if we had more than one camera we could of recorded footage quicker and could of produced more and would of been able to fill more of the video up with footage instead of nothing.

I think there were several things we could have done to have made it better and fit in with the key concepts of music videos, the first thing was that the artist was not located at all in the video and it was all narrative, which seemed at the time to be good because then the audience would concentrate fully on the narrative. The second thing was the lyrics and visuals, I dont think they had a strong relationship in the video because you could not see how the lyrics joined with the narrative. If these were fully achieved in the video then the video would had been of a higher quality. I have learnt from these mistakes by making a stronger relationship between the lyrics and visuals in our Final music video, We have included the artist in the narrative in our final video so the video is connected more to Goodwin's Theory.

After the shooting we went back to the media suite and started on the editing process, It was a bit tricky at first trying to transfer the film from the camera to the mac, because i had never used the software on the mac before and i had little experience of the cameras, but in the end we managed to upload it and do some reasonable editing to the film that we had. From this task I have become more confident of using the video cameras, because I filmed some of the shots in our video. I have also learnt how to use the software on the Mac as well. At first I got help from my friend and he taught me how to the upload the video clips and how to edit the film. I think I have learnt from this that time management is everything and it is also vital to create a storyboard because during our pre-lim task we did not have a solid storyboard created so we made the shots up on the spot which wasnt very good, So for our main coursework stage we are more planned because we have got together as a team and have drafted up a storyboard and finalised it so we have a clear idea of what kind of shots we want and when.
