The planning for our video
For the music video we all wanted to choose something that we would agree to do on to claim interesting from everyone in the group and also choose a song which had a good meaning to it and the words meant a lot. When one of the members of our group announced a song "Rambling Man", this is a folk song by Lauren Marling. As soon as I heard this song I thought of an idea.
Song
Before we had heard the song we realised what the song was about, The term rambling man is when someone often roams around a lot of places.
Ideas for our music Video
First idea:
The first idea we had was to show a man in his mid thirty's walking out of his door seeing flash backs of his something that he has done but you don't get a clear idea of what he has done. The whole thing will be shot in grey scale to give the story a dark gloomy image. He then walks around the local town thinking about what he has done. The man then goes back home to see his family standing there at the door, as he approaches the door his family are standing there smiling at him and the only light you see is coming from the door to give the effect of happiness/light at end of the tunnel. He becomes this happy man after having these depressing thoughts.
Finalised Idea
The finalised idea we had was to start with the man sitting in the living room staring at the door, whilst he is doing this, you see images of him and his wife having a heated argument. But both scenes switch back and forth. Then we get a POV shot from the man staring at the front door. The scene of the man on his own is sustained longer than the argument scene. The shot change would be quite slow because of the tempo of the song. It wouldn't look right if the shot change was fast.
The man then walks out of the door and then the next scene is him walking through the high street in the town, he finds a bench and sits down. The man stares at the wall opposite him, this shot relates back the previous shot of the man sitting in his front room. during this shot we have a time lapse of the film being sped up and he is the main focus, everyone around him becomes a blur. During this scene we would not see parts of the previous scene with him and his wife, this would be one continious shot. But once he starts walking again more of the argument is revealed. This is because when he is on the bench he zones out and just switches off from everything around him but once he is back on his journey his mind becomes focused on the past occurance.
He decides to pluck up the courage to go back to his house and fully reveal what he has done. He slowely opens the door to reveal his children sitting on the sofa where he was previously sitting. He turns to the kitchen where the argument took place he sees his wife but realises that she is just an image and that image fades away. This shot fully reveals what actually happened in the argument and the conclusion is that he killed her.
The link to the Research
During my research about Laura Marling existing videos, Analysis's of other band's music videos and the prezi research on Goodwin's Music video Theory I have realised that the majority of music videos have a narrative to them, if they dont have narrative then they are usually live performances of the bands. The artist is usually in the music video so I have decided that we should include the artist in the narrative of the music video, also have close ups of the artist also. I have seen from Laura Marling's videos that she is included in the majority of the them so this is another reason for why I suggested that we should show the artist in the video.
